Product Overview

What is Ona?

Ona (formerly Gitpod) is an enterprise software engineering platform that combines sandboxed cloud development environments with high-autonomy coding agents and security guardrails. Teams use Ona as mission control for planning, implementing, reviewing, and deploying changes through agents that operate inside short-lived, OS-level isolated environments, whether hosted in Ona’s cloud or in the customer’s own VPC.

Key Features

  • Sandboxed Cloud Environments

API-first, OS-level isolated development environments defined declaratively (e.g., devcontainer.json and automations.yml), pre-configured with tools, dependencies, and integrations, and able to run either in Ona’s multi-tenant cloud or in a dedicated VPC for full control over source, secrets, and network.

  • Autonomous Software Engineering Agents

Built-in agents that can analyze tasks, generate and refactor code, run commands, execute tests, open and update branches and pull requests, and handle long-running workflows directly inside Ona Environments, significantly increasing engineering throughput.

  • Enterprise Guardrails and Compliance

Enterprise-ready security layer including RBAC, SSO/OIDC, organization-wide policies, command deny lists, detailed audit trails for both humans and agents, and deployment options in customer-managed VPCs to meet strict security and compliance requirements.

  • Flexible IDE and Device Support

Full VS Code experience in the browser plus integrations with local IDEs such as VS Code, Cursor, JetBrains IDEs, and Zed, allowing developers to work from laptops, desktops, or even phones while agents operate in the same remote environments.

  • Programmable via API and SDK

Programmatic access to environments, agents, and policies through APIs and SDKs, enabling integration with CI/CD pipelines, internal tooling, and infrastructure automation workflows.

Use Cases

  • End-to-End Feature Delivery : Product and engineering teams delegate tickets to Ona Agents, which implement changes, run tests, and open pull requests inside sandboxed environments, compressing delivery cycles and increasing development throughput.
  • Safe High-Autonomy Experimentation : Organizations experiment with high-autonomy agents in ephemeral, OS-level isolated environments, reducing the risk of agents affecting local machines or corporate networks while still granting them powerful capabilities.
  • Enterprise Cloud Development Platform : Enterprises run Ona in their own AWS VPC with strict access controls, auditability, and model choice, standardizing secure cloud development across teams and regions.
  • Standardized Onboarding and Environments : Teams define repeatable, declarative environment templates so new and existing developers get identical, ready-to-code workspaces on demand, eliminating "works on my machine" issues and speeding up onboarding.
  • Parallel Agent Workstreams on Large Codebases : Multiple Ona Environments and agents run in parallel on different branches or services, enabling large refactors, framework upgrades, or repetitive maintenance tasks to be executed concurrently at scale.
