What is Walrus?

Walrus is a decentralized, verifiable data platform created by Mysten Labs — the team behind the Sui blockchain. It provides developers with secure, censorship-resistant storage for unstructured data using advanced erasure coding, ensuring high availability even under Byzantine fault conditions. Walrus integrates natively with Sui smart contracts for coordination, access control, and payments, and powers a growing ecosystem of AI, DeFi, and data marketplace applications. Its native token, WAL, is used to pay for storage and to stake and secure the network.

  Every stored blob receives a verifiable ID and tracked history, so developers and applications can cryptographically prove data provenance and authenticity at any time.

• High Availability via Erasure Coding

  Advanced linear fountain codes distribute encoded blob fragments across storage nodes, maintaining data accessibility even when multiple nodes are offline or malicious — at roughly 5x the raw blob size, far cheaper than full replication.

  Storage space and stored blobs are represented as on-chain objects on Sui, enabling smart contracts to check availability, extend blob lifetimes, control access, and trigger agentic payments programmatically.
