Hermes Agent
An open-source autonomous agent by Nous Research that self-improves over time — building persistent memory, generating its own skills, and running across 14+ platforms from a single install.
Product Overview
What is Hermes Agent?
Hermes Agent is an open-source autonomous agent built by Nous Research, the lab behind the Hermes, Nomos, and Psyche model families. Unlike IDE-bound coding copilots or single-API chatbot wrappers, Hermes Agent runs on your own infrastructure — from a $5 VPS to serverless platforms like Daytona and Modal — and becomes more capable the longer it operates. It features a closed learning loop that autonomously creates and refines skills, maintains persistent cross-session memory, and builds a deepening model of the user over time. It connects to 14+ messaging and productivity platforms and supports any LLM provider via OpenRouter, OpenAI, Nous Portal, or custom endpoints.
Key Features
Self-Improving Learning Loop
Autonomously creates skills from experience, self-improves them during use, and applies periodic memory nudges — so the agent gets more capable with every task it completes.
Persistent Cross-Session Memory
Multi-tiered memory system with FTS5 full-text search, LLM summarization, and Honcho-powered user modeling ensures the agent never forgets context across sessions.
Runs Anywhere
Supports six terminal backends — local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, and Modal — allowing deployment on any infrastructure from a personal server to serverless environments that cost nearly nothing when idle.
14+ Platform Gateway
Operates across CLI, Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, Matrix, Email, SMS, DingTalk, Feishu, and more — seamlessly picking up context when switching between platforms.
Parallel Subagents & Automation
Spawns isolated subagents for parallel workstreams and supports natural-language cron scheduling for unattended reports, backups, and briefings.
Full Web & MCP Integration
Built-in web search, browser automation, vision, image generation, and TTS — plus MCP server support for extending capabilities with external tools.
Use Cases
- Personal Productivity Automation : Users can delegate recurring tasks — daily briefings, file backups, scheduled reports — to run unattended across any connected messaging platform.
- Software Development Assistance : Developers can leverage persistent project memory and autonomous skill generation to handle multi-step coding tasks, code review, and pipeline execution without repeated context-setting.
- Research & Data Processing : Researchers can use batch processing, trajectory export, and RL training integration (via Atropos) to run and monitor experiments through a conversational interface.
- Remote Infrastructure Management : Teams can deploy Hermes on a cloud VM and interact with it via Telegram or Slack — executing shell commands, managing environments, and monitoring outputs without direct SSH access.
- Multi-Platform Workflow Orchestration : Organizations can connect Hermes to internal tools via MCP servers or messaging platforms like WeCom, DingTalk, and Mattermost to orchestrate complex multi-step workflows.
